This reading guide helps you estimate how long it will take to read any book in the catalog. The estimates are based on word count and an average reading speed of 230 words per minute. You can also adjust the speed to match your own pace.
The catalog includes works ranging from very short stories to lengthy novels. The median word count is 44,839 words, which corresponds to about 195 minutes of reading at the average speed. Use the guide to plan your reading time.

The Reading Tracker is built around pages: you record your current page, the total pages, and a daily page goal. It does not track sections or minutes as progress, because those are not the units it uses. Instead, it Catalogue maintenance uses source records and bibliographic context.
If the catalog does not provide a fixed page count, the tracker estimates one using a default of 250 words per page. For example, Parodies of the works of English & American authors, vol. II — Background and Themes has 233,886 words, so the initial page estimate would be about 936 pages. You can replace that with the total from your own edition if it differs.
The default daily goal is 20 pages, but you can adjust it to any number that works for you. The tracker then calculates estimated finish days as the ceiling of remaining pages divided by your daily goal. For a book like the Parodies volume, at 20 pages per day, you would finish in about 47 days. If you increase the goal to 30 pages, that drops to about 32 days.
The estimated remaining time is proportional: it multiplies the estimated total minutes by the fraction of pages remaining. This gives you a rough sense of how many hours are left, which can help you decide whether to adjust your goal.
The tracker stores your history in your browser's localStorage, so you can close the page and return later without an account. Each time you finish a reading session, update the current page to reflect your progress. The tracker will recalculate the remaining pages and the estimated finish date.
This regular updating is what makes the tracker useful. It turns a long book into a series of manageable checkpoints, and it gives you a clear picture of how much you have left. For a 936-page volume, seeing the remaining pages shrink can be motivating.
The initial page estimate assumes 250 words per page, which may not match your physical or digital edition. If your edition has different pagination, you can enter the total page count manually. This is especially helpful for older books that may have wide margins or illustrations that affect page numbers.
With an accurate total, the tracker's estimates become more precise. For readers who are reading a short satire or a multi-volume collection, the page-based approach keeps your planning simple and grounded.
